Ladies and gentlemen, dear friends of chess,

It is a great honor for me to open this evening dedicated to a cause that truly highlights the social and human dimensions of chess. For several years, European federations, under the leadership of the European Chess Union, have placed health, social inclusion, and disability at the heart of their commitments.

We know that chess is not only a sport of elite competition. It is a powerful tool for inclusion, a unique educational lever, and a means to create connections, restore confidence, and support those in need. This is why, across Europe, we have encouraged and supported initiatives that integrate chess into medical and social institutions, help people with disabilities, and provide assistance to young carers.

The year 2025 will mark a major milestone in these efforts at the international level. The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has now made these issues a strategic priority, fully recognizing the impact of chess on cognitive health, inclusion, and well-being. This is a significant step forward and a recognition of the work that has been carried out for years by national and European federations.

In this movement, France has established itself as a pioneering country, a key player in developing chess as a tool for social impact. Thanks to the dedication of its leaders and numerous volunteers, France has demonstrated that chess can transform lives, open new perspectives, and offer everyone a place in society.

Today, the creation of the “L’Échiquier pour la Vie” Foundation marks a decisive new step. This foundation goes beyond national borders; it carries an international ambition, bringing together businesses, institutions, and committed stakeholders to make chess a true force for social progress.

I want to commend this initiative, thank everyone who contributed to making it a reality, and express my admiration for this commitment, which I am sure will inspire many other nations.

Together, we have the power to make chess an even stronger tool for impact. Together, we can continue this incredible journey and build a future where chess is not only a sport, an art, or a science but also a solution for a more inclusive and supportive society.

Thank you all, and long live chess!
